Well, we can relax a bit, all most important operations have already been done. I set the computer on testing for the whole weekend and go to my village house to drink beer… The weather is hot, it’s a hard trial for the hardware… I let him prove itself. I won’t be upset even if it breaks. Processor is under warranty, mother board costs only 20 dollars.
In spite of the heat the fanless computer passed testing successfully. The case didn’t heat more than 65°C at 30°C room temperature taking into consideration the small size of radiator and hot 640 Prescott (3.2 GHz). I consider this is a good result paying attention to the hot weather and 100% charge of the processor with S&M programme what happens in reality rarely.
Strictly speaking, the rest is a matter of technique. I cut out the facial part of an old computer case together with the disk drive fasteners by means of an angle grinder and designate it to the computer.
Power unit. We decided to use a ready-made fanless power unit for this modded computer. Unfortunately by that moment by some magic reason there were no fanless power units on sale… We had to use an old power unit of FSP company with 120 mm fan. Its cooler works rather quiet what allows to wait appearance of fanless units in sale as long as necessary. Presence of at least one fan in summer time is also useful.
This is how the computer looks on the inside.
Disk drivers are placed in standard fasteners on a piece of an old front side.
Stop button is behind.
To get access to the disk drivers you must move the cover aside.
General view. Don’t swear the quality of pictures… it’s difficult to shoot shining aluminium. Perhaps, I’ll try to shoot anew later…
Even the shining Linux logo didn’t come out well. In actual fact it is backlighted evenly and looks effective. There is a particular article about this penguin making.
That’s all. One more fanless project is finished. By the moment of this article writing the computer had worked more than two weeks, faced the May heat and didn’t fail. At average charge of the computer the processor temperature didn’t exceed 45-48°C, the hard disk temperature – 37-39°C.
