Fanless computer / 0dBA Project rev. 2

    Video adapter
The construction turned out to be rather complicated: as you remember, radiator was to be mounted near video adapter, but I couldn’t buy or even pull out from anywhere pipes of proper length to get easy access to the radiator location. Thus, I had to make a composite construction consisting of two sections of short pipes and transient thermal block. I used three 5-mm pipes from 2HC2 for the first section, and two U-type 6-mm pipes from video Coolermaster CoolViva. I didn’t have to seek for plates; there was a heap of them left after experiments with Igloo 7700. This is what I got after fashioning some copper thermal blocks and assemblage of all components into single construction:

Test run revealed the following drawbacks:
• Three 5-mm pipes with primitive wick are not enough – the main thermal block burns hot up to 70°C.
• Textolite on the board underside reaches the same temperature, because overlocked GDDR3 memory gives out a lot of heat.
• Elements of voltage regulator on the backside are overheated at overlocking and hang up the board.

The first problem was difficult to be originally solved, that’s why I simply mounted a mightier radiator to the thermal block. The memory also was provided with radiators, but here I had to make a compromise: because of height constraint, their finning was not as full as I wanted. Moreover, owing to their position over the main radiator, ventilation was not perfect too. Thus, finally we had to be satisfied with 80°C at load (chips GDDR3 stability is guaranteed within 85°C, their physical integrity – within the bounds of 125°C). I handled the voltage regulator similarly:

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
